Choosing the Right Filter
Your filter works in tandem with your pump to keep your pool clean, but not all filters are created equal. Sand filters are a popular, low-maintenance option that trap larger debris and only need backwashing every few weeks. Cartridge filters offer finer filtration and better water clarity, making them ideal for pools in leafy areas or with frequent use. For the best of both worlds, some setups use a hybrid system.
It’s also important to choose a filter that matches your pump’s flow rate—too small and it’ll clog quickly, too large and you’re wasting energy. In Darwin’s climate, filters are exposed to high heat and humidity, so it’s essential to choose one with durable construction and easy-to-clean features. Still weighing up your options? We’re here to help you make the right decision.
How often should I clean my pool filter?
The cleaning frequency depends on the type of filter. Cartridge filters typically need cleaning every 4–6 weeks, depending on usage and debris levels. Sand filters should be backwashed every 2–4 weeks or when the pressure gauge rises 8–10 PSI above normal.
Regular cleaning ensures proper water flow and keeps your pool clear. If neglected, dirty filters can cause poor circulation, algae growth, and cloudy water—even if your chemical balance is correct.
What type of pool filter is best for home pools?
For most residential pools, cartridge and sand filters are the most common. Cartridge filters provide finer filtration and are better at removing small particles, while sand filters are more budget-friendly and easier to maintain.
If you have a high-debris environment (like lots of nearby trees), a cartridge filter may be more effective. However, if you're looking for simplicity and durability, sand filters are a solid option. The best choice depends on pool size, environment, and how much maintenance you're comfortable doing.
Can I run my pool without a filter temporarily?
Technically, yes—but it’s not recommended. Even short periods without filtration can lead to debris buildup, algae growth, and rapid water imbalance. The filter is essential for removing suspended particles and maintaining circulation.
If your filter is broken or being serviced, try to limit pool use and keep up with skimming, brushing, and chemical balancing until it’s back in action. The sooner you restore filtration, the better for your pool’s health.
